Brendan Chase
Graduation date: Spring 2022
What are you up to now?
Right now, I work as a Paramedic for New Orleans EMS, responding to 911 calls and providing medical care in challenging environments. Through NOEMS I research pre-hospital ultrasound use and have applied to present at EMS World Expo next year. I also teach at Tulane University as an adjunct lecturer for Tulane SoPA’s EMT education class, open to both Newcomb Tulane and SoPA undergraduates.
Which internships, organizations, or classes prepared you for your first job?
I volunteered for New Orleans EMS through the VIGOR program during my freshman year and went on to complete a service learning there with coordination from the Undergraduate Public Health Department. During my sophomore year summer, I joined New Orleans EMS as an EMT and continued to serve part time throughout the rest of my undergraduate career. Eventually I worked my way from EMT to Advanced EMT to Paramedic, the highest level of prehospital provider.
Do you have any advice for public health students?
I recommend BSPH students not underestimate the possibilities of providing hands-on patient care in their career. I’ve found speaking with patients not only informs my macro-level research, but also constantly reminds me why our work matters.
