This course is designed to provide students with the skills to work in prevention of and conduct epidemiologic research in HIV and other sexually acquired infections. The first part of the course, we discuss the etiology, treatment, epidemiology and common prevention methods for HIV. The second part of the course, we discuss the etiology, treatment, epidemiology and common prevention methods of the most common STIs. In the third part of the class, we will apply what we have learned. Throughout the class we will examine ethical dilemmas in HIV/STI public health. Students will have hands on practice examining public health issues by completing five exercises. Finally, we put HIV/STIs into context by discussing social, economic and political ramifications of these infections in the world by reviewing a book and one movie that illustrate these concepts.
